Mango Languages

Summit Public Library District is pleased to announce that it now offers the Mango Languages online language-learning system to its patrons. Mango is free for all library patrons, and offers a fast and convenient solution for our community's increasing language-learning needs. Each lesson combines real life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that integrates components of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and culture. Users learn actual conversation, breaking down complex conversational elements within an audio-visual framework that allows the user to draw important connections between pieces of information they have already learned. For more information regarding using the Mango Language learning system, please contact library staff to set up a free on-line account. Summit Library patrons only please.

Summit Public Library District selected to receive American Dream Starts @ your libraryŽ literacy grant for English language learners.

Summit Public Library District is one of the seventy public libraries in 21 states selected by the American Library Association (ALA) to receive a $5,000 grant as part of "The American Dream Starts @ your libraryŽ" literacy project. This initiative is funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation

Summit Public Library District will use these funds to build innovative literacy services for adult English language learners living and working in their community. The library has started English as Second Language classes in partnership with Moraine Valley Community College, and will expand their print and digital literacy collections available to patrons.

For more than a century, public libraries have been a cornerstone of the American Dream, providing equal access to information of all kinds. In fact, libraries are among the first American institutions immigrants turn to for help in learning how to read, write and speak English. The 2005 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) found that one in 20 US adults have such limited English skills that they can't read a news paper or help their children with schoolwork. The Summit Public Library District is proud to be involved in the advancement of literacy for all residents of the Summit community.
